“…The results of experiment 3 confirm the assumption that the memory traces formed during lateralized navigation training are lateralized and do not spontaneously transfer to the other hemisphere, so that at the time of synthesis both hemispheres contain different pieces of information pertinent to the same navigation task. In this respect, place navigation resembles visual discrimination learning or active avoidance learning which can be lateralized during unilateral functional decortication by cortical spreading depression (Buresova and Bures, 1971, 1973Buresova et al, 1971;Goldowitz et al, 1972) Inactivation of the dorsal hippocampus elicits effective blockade of target-directed navigation although it leaves the ventral hippocampus intact.
