Time for Tele-TTO? Lessons Learned From Digital Interviewer-Assisted Time Trade-Off Data Collection

Abstract: The preferred mode of administration of time trade-off (TTO) in large-scale valuation studies is face-to-face (personal) interviews facilitated by a trained interviewer. Geographical, financial or situational constraints could complicate personal TTO interviews. When facing such constraints, the use of digital interviews, in which trained interviewers facilitate through videotelephony software (i.e. tele-TTO) may be considered. This paper aims to guide researchers in how to approach tele-TTO interviews and dis… Show more

“…Some evidence exists that individuals completing these tasks without supervision (i.e., online) may yield data of lower quality [ 31 ]. Unfortunately, our experimental set-up, as well as restrictions relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, precluded the use of one-to-one personal interviews in the lab or the use of digital interviewer-assisted interviews [ 23 ]. Note that we aimed to compensate for this by having an experienced researcher present at all times.…”

“…A recent TTO study suggests that digital interviews might be a feasible alternative to face-to-face interviews because they yield similar results. 44 From our understanding of these 2 conditions, the disease burden of DS, especially in terms of cognitive impairments, is on average more severe than in LGS. Seizure frequency in LGS can be much higher than in DS, but seizures associated with LGS are typically drop seizures rather than convulsive seizures.…”

“…In the present study, the ping-pong approach was used to avoid these data issues, although it is possible that it produces its own framing effects. Finally, TTO valuations conducted via video calls have not been formally validated or compared against face-to-face TTO valuations, although a TTO published in 2020 suggests they yield similar results [ 45 ]. The online interviews in this study were designed to minimise differences in the online versus the standard face-to-face TTO interviewing procedures.…”
