Time evolution and finite element representation of Phase Space Zonal Structures in ORB5

Abstract: Phase Space Zonal Structures (PSZSs), obtained by averaging out dependencies on angle-like variables in the energetic particle (EP) distribution function, play a fundamental role in regulating EP transport induced by Alfvén instabilities in burning plasmas, acting as a slowly varying nonlinear equilibrium state. Therefore, they are of great interest for the development of reduced models for the description of EP heat and particle transport on long time scales, comparable with the energy confinement time, for f… Show more

“…Future research directions include the derivation of general orbit-averaged source and collision terms on the analytical side. On the numerical side, PSZS diagnostics have been developed for global gyrokinetic and hybrid codes such as HMGC and ORB5 [19], enabling the study of phase space transport processes during nonlinear gyrokinetic simulation. At present, the EP workflow calculates the PSZS evolution within the kick model [53] approximation.…”

“…Here, for simplicity, we have dropped ∆ 1 and ∆ 2 terms in equation (A. 19) and noted the result of A.2 to neglect the ∝ θG ∂ θ contribution to the nonlinear response for F 0 * symmetric in σ. We have also assumed T e /T i ≪ 1, without loss of generality, in order to drop δ φG with respect to [δϕ G ] ψ following [48].…”

“…The Hamiltonian-mapping diagnostics has been applied in HMGC to study the phase-space dynamics of the particles in the chirping modes which have also been studied with the fully gyrokinetic EUTERPE and the reduced CKA-EUTERPE model [37]. For ORB5, a dedicated finite element representation of phase space zonal structures has been introduced [74] which can be used for various purposes, including chirping dynamics. Fully numerical energetic-particle distribution functions (e.g.…”
