Time‐Dependent Morphology Evolution by Annealing Processes on Polymer:Fullerene Blend Solar Cells

Abstract: Changes in the nanoscale morphologies of the blend films of poly (3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), for high‐performance bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, are compared and investigated for two annealing treatments with different morphology evolution time scales, having special consideration for the diffusion and aggregation of PCBM molecules. An annealing condition with relatively fast diffusion and aggregation of the PCBM molecules during P3HT crystallization… Show more

“…Combining all these strategy into a systematic program for tuning ordered aggregation of conjugated polymers for charge transport in solution will be helpful for the straight processing of solution to prepare efficient film devices. The strategy of solvent vapor annealing is mild [171] and flexible due to the treatment at room temperature and various solvent vapor atmospheres. As a method involving (partly) dissolution of chains, SVA is also a potential tool simulating solution processing to better understand the self-assembly of conjugated polymers during film formation.…”

“…Beside the donor/acceptor ratio, the most important parameters that infl uence the nanoscale morphology are the processing solvent, the solute concentration, and the method of fi lm preparation. [30][31][32] Inkjet printing of thin-fi lm libraries allows a reproducible method for comparing different concentrations, ratios, and fi lm thicknesses. [ 26 ] Newly discovered donor/acceptor materials require a large number of combinations to be tested for their behavior in bulk heterojunction solar cell applications.…”

“…This may be attributed to a reduced effective band gap caused by improved crystallinity. 48,49 The V OC gradually increased from 0.61 to 0.78 V with increasing number of fluorine atoms in the polymer backbone. The BTzDT2FBT:PC 71 BM device exhibited the highest PCE of 7% among the three copolymers with J SC of 14.64 mA cm − 2 , V OC of 0.75 V and FF of 0.64.…”
