Time-delay signature of chaos in 1550 nm VCSELs with variable-polarization FBG feedback

Abstract: Based on the framework of spin-flip model (SFM), the output characteristics of a 1550 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) subject to variable-polarization fiber Bragg grating (FBG) feedback (VPFBGF) have been investigated. With the aid of the self-correlation function (SF) and the permutation entropy (PE) function, the time-delay signature (TDS) of chaos in the VPFBGF-VCSEL is evaluated, and then the influences of the operation parameters on the TDS of chaos are analyzed. The results show that th… Show more

“…where <•> denotes time-average and Δt is the time-shift. Also, TD information can possibly be revealed by the permutation entropy (PE) [21,28,33,34]. PE is evaluated versus the embedding delay time τ e by the following procedure for each polarization with intensity time series I(t).…”

“…Different from conventional reflected mirrors, an FBG can provide distributed feedback along its length, and the group velocity dispersion of FBG can weaken and suppress the TDS. We extended the FBG feedback to VCSELs and theoretically studied the TDS of chaos in VCSELs subject to variable-polarization FBG feedback [20] as well as the polarization-resolved TDS of chaos in an FBG feedback VCSEL (FBGF-VCSEL) [21]. Even so, no experimental investigation on the TDS of chaotic output from an FBGF-VCSEL has been carried on.…”

“…These phenomena are often considered as a drawback, degrading the laser performance. At present, they can also be generalized to apply some areas of great concern, such as polarization switch, polarization multiplexing and demultiplexing and optical logic gates devices [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. It is a very attractive scheme that optical logic devices are designed by means of the PS of an optically injected VCSEL.…”
