Time-course effects of endurance training on fat oxidation in sedentary elderly people

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To investigate alterations in whole body fat oxidation after 7 and 14 weeks of progressive endurance training in sedentary elderly subjects. DESIGN: Longitudinal, 14 weeks of progressive endurance training on a cycle ergometer (3 training sessions per week). Full sets of measurements were performed before, and after 7 and 14 weeks of training. SUBJECTS: 13 healthy sedentary subjects (5 men, 8 women) (age 62.8 AE 2.3 y). MEASUREMENTS: 24 h indirect calorimetric measurements under standardised conditi… Show more

“…In longitudinal trials, resting fat oxidation is reduced by bed-rest 55 and increased by short term endurance and resistance training (8 weeks 50,56,57 ). It appears than in the very few studies done with longer term training (14 weeks) fat oxidation is not increased 57,58 .…”

“…The energy supply (ES) was calculated to meet each subject's energy needs on a personal basis. For that purpose, expected daily EE was calculated from the duration and the energy cost of the various activities in the calorimeters (e.g., walking) 15 and from each subject's predicted BMR. 17 Indirect calorimetry measurements.…”
