Timber Housing Production Systems in Brazil

Abstract: This paper is based on an evaluation of the industrialization levels and main production systems of Brazilian timber housing producers. Two methods were used to investigate this understudied topic. Literaturebased projection was carried out to identify the production system of each sampled company, from the construction technique(s) produced by the same. The second method consisted of face-to-face interviews to identify the current production system of each producer. For both methodologies, the timber housing … Show more

“…Timber houses are produced both in more rudimentary artisanal styles and modern modalities stemming from semi-industrialization and industrialization, which are based on partial and complete production of prefabricated wooden parts and elements, respectively. These elements are semi-finished and finished (off-site) in plants to be assembled at the construction site, as theoretically described by (15) and scientifically confirmed by (31).…”

“…While this study integrated a series of different approaches developed to characterize the timber housing production sector in Brazil, (16,31,39), and dozens of other approaches ascertained a domestic sectoral population of 210 producers, out of which 107 companies were randomly evaluated with a representative sampling rate of 51 % and a margin of error of 6,65 %. This value is close to the ideal level of 5 % prescribed by (41).…”

“…Using the survey strategy performed by De Araujo et al (2018a;2018b;2018c;2019a;2019b;2020a;2020b;2020c), the methodological route included the application of face-to-face interviews driven by a semi-structured questionnaire for dozens of major topics, including this unprecedented approach to identify execution time of timber housing construction techniques.…”

“…A madeira tem sido comumente usada como material de construção por centenas de anos, muito utilizado na construção de casas, incluindo forros, pisos, paredes e telhados (BABATUNDE et al, 2020). No Brasil, estudos apontam elevado nível de industrialização na construção de moradias a partir dessa matéria-prima (ARAUJO et al, 2020).…”
