Tilted Face-Centered-Cubic Supercrystals of PbS Nanocubes

Abstract: We demonstrate a direct fabrication of PbS nanocube supercrystals without size-selection pretreatment on the building blocks. Electron microscopic and synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering analyses confirm that nanocubes pack through a tilted face-centered-cubic (fcc) arrangement, that is, face-to-face along the <110>(super) direction, resulting in a real packing efficiency of as high as ∼83%. This new type of superstructure consisting of nanocubes as building blocks, reported here for the first time, is co… Show more

“…Colloidal nanoparticles in suspension could self‐assemble into periodic structures on the substrate (i.e., a silicon nitride membrane, alkyl‐functionalized silicon chip or transmission electron microscopy (TEM) gird) or in a glass vial through solvent evaporation . During the evaporation procedure, under certain a temperature or dynamic vacuum, the assembly of nanoparticles is obtained as the attractive ligand‐ligand interaction . Here, interparticle potential might be ascribed to a combination of various interactions, where the van der Waals interaction acts as a primary attractive component and commonly eliminates electrostatic and steric repulsion.…”

“…In a recent report, coupled SAXS and WAXS patterns of oriented individual supracrystals enabled the determination of the relative orientation of the nanocrystal crystallographic faces within the supracrystal. The tilted orientation of PbS nanocubes was also found to be responsible for their unusually high packing efficiency.…”

“…It is though interesting to see how shape alone can have such an influence in how various materials self-assemble in an entropy driven process. Lately, there has been an increasing interest in the production and self-assembly of polyhedral particles [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. Much progress has been made in enumerating and characterizing the packing of polyhedral shapes and the self-assembly of polyhedral nanocrystals into ordered superstructures [16].…”
