Tifinagh Character Recognition Using Geodesic Distances, Decision Trees & Neural Networks

Abstract: Abstract-The recognition of Tifinagh characters cannot be perfectly carried out using the conventional methods which are based on the invariance, this is due to the similarity that exists between some characters which differ from each other only by size or rotation, hence the need to come up with new methods to remedy this shortage. In this paper we propose a direct method based on the calculation of what is called Geodesic Descriptors which have shown significant reliability vis-à-vis the change of scale, noi… Show more

“…Arabic were collected and recorded. For the first time in an ethnozoological study, Riffian names have been written in Riffian format (Tifinagh, in the script for this language accepted by the Royal Institute of Amazigh Culture [IRCAM] [57];). Westermarck [58] previously presented animal names in the Tifinagh of some tribes, but only as a phonetic transcription.…”

“…One of 20 wild species extant in the Rif and used in ethnozoology, T. graeca, is globally threatened (Vulnerable, IUCN Red List category [92];), although considered Low Concern at the regional level of Morocco [57]. Two more species utilized are globally threatened (P. leo and G. cuvieri, both vulnerable), but are regionally extinct.…”

“…Recent proposed approaches for the recognition of printed Tifinagh characters are generally based on the hybridization of several descriptors [3,4], classifiers [5,6], or both [7]; which gives very good results in terms of recognition rate. In return, combining several descritpors / classifiers increases significantly the compexity of the system.…”

“…The Tifinagh alphabet has several characters that can be obtained from others by a simple rotation, which makes invariant descriptors commonly used less effective. For this reason, we used a combination of Geodesic descriptors [5] and Zernike moments [6].…”
