“…Other factors, beside wave action, may also explain the observed differences in density and biomass of U. pinnatifida at our study sites. For example, the higher density and biomass at PV, compared at BSM, may be explained by the high nutrient concentration in San Antonio Bay (Becherucci et al., 2021; Martinetto et al., 2010). Undaria pinnatifida thrives in areas enriched with nitrogen and phosphorous (Castric‐Fey et al., 1999; Sfriso & Facca, 2013; Torres et al., 2004;) and therefore grows more prolifically at human‐impacted sites where nutrient levels are higher (Morelissen et al., 2013; Torres et al., 2004).…”

“…On the contrary, juvenile snails outside the canopy probably avoid predation because of their smaller sizes and consequently lower detectability while buried—or, alternatively, they may not constitute dietary items for the visual tactics predators. In addition, Ulva can modify the surrounding chemical conditions (e.g., Ulva detritus enhance sediment oxygen uptake, nitrification, and denitrification, García‐Robledo et al, 2013; Ulva blooms increase the surrounding pH, Becherucci et al, 2021), which may not be suitable for juveniles. We also expected that females bearing egg capsules would be differentially distributed under the canopy.…”

“…The detrimental effects of macroalgal blooms due to nutrient enrichment have been demonstrated by many studies, including negative effects both on natural communities and ecosystem functions (Fox et al, 2009; Lewis & De Witt, 2017; Österling & Pihl, 2001; Valiela et al, 1997) and on the goods and services of human use (Jessen et al, 2015; Lyons et al, 2014; Troell et al, 2005). Eutrophicated systems with a large water exchange (i.e., macrotidal) or at initial stages of eutrophication, however, can have positive effects on communities (Baldrighi et al, 2019; Becherucci et al, 2021; Martinetto et al, 2010; Quillien et al, 2015). The increase in primary production can support high densities of consumers (by increasing food availability) and provide shelter and new microhabitats for benthic macro‐ and meiofauna.…”

“…Therefore, assess the potential of coastal ecosystems as modulators of ocean acidi cation and carbon sinks is a very active area of research. Both functions have been extensively characterized for seagrass meadows (Hendriks et al, 2014), macroalgae "forests" (Becherucci et al, 2021), mangrove forests (Sippo et al, 2016), and coral reefs (Anthony et al, 2013), but the natural variability of these systems makes it considerably di cult to extrapolate parameters between different locations (Van Dam et al, 2021). Changes in the pH of coastal zones respond to many forcing factors not necessarily related to ocean acidi cation, such as the ow of nutrients, environmental and land use transformations in continental basins, and changes in the structure and metabolism of the coastal ecosystems (Carstensen & Duarte, 2019;Duarte et al, 2013).…”
