Ticks and Tick-Borne Diseases in Cuba, Half a Century of Scientific Research

Abstract: Ticks and the vast array of pathogens they transmit, including bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths, constitute a growing burden for human and animal health worldwide. In Cuba, the major tropical island in the Caribbean, ticks are an important cause of vector-borne diseases affecting livestock production, pet animal health and, to a lesser extent, human health. The higher number of tick species in the country belong to the Argasidae family and, probably less known, is the presence of an autochthonous tic… Show more

“…Furthermore, future studies investigating the status of acaricidal resistance in tick populations of small ruminants would guide integrated control of ticks in this country. Such integrated tick control strategies, consisting in the systematic combination of at least two control technologies, including anti-tick recombinant vaccines, aiming to reduce selection pressure in favour of acaricide-resistant individuals, while maintaining adequate levels of animal production, have been implemented in some countries such as Cuba with promising results [97]. * Three doses of each drug were given in this study whereas a single dose was administered in the rest of listed studies; NS; Not studied; NA: Not applicable.…”

“…Infections with B. gibsoni are usually acute and characterized by anorexia, fever, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, and pallor, with carrier states common in recovered animals [65]. Other Babesia infections reported in mammalian hosts in the CAC include B. gibsoni and Babesia vogeli in cats [4,29,60] [75], and B. caballi in horses [76][77][78]. Recently, Babesia odocoilei was reported for the first time from free-living Ixodes cf.…”

“…Tick infestations and TBDs of the canine population have been reported throughout the Caribbean [ 6 , 22 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. However, very little or no reported data is available for some islands, including Tobago, the smaller of the two islands that comprise the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.…”
