Zincian h~gbomite (ZnO 3.5-10.5wt.%) occurs as an accessory phase in garnet quartzite that is intimately associated with the Broken Hill and Black Mountain Cu-Pb-Zn-Ag deposits, Aggeneys, South Africa. H6gbomite coexists with a number of minerals including quartz, gahnite, sillimanite, sphalerite, pyrrhotine, pyrite, magnetite, and ilmenite, suggesting that h6gbomite may have formed by sulphidation and oxidation reactions. Such reactions may account for the high Zn content of h6gbomite. Where associated with metamorphosed massive sulphide deposits h6gbomite is enriched in Zn relative to that found in ultramafics, Fe-Ti deposits, Fe ores, aluminous metasediments, and skarns. This enrichment in h6gbomite constitutes a potential exploration guide for metamorphosed massive sulphide deposits.

In the northeastern part of the Grenville Province, along the gulf of St Lawrence, cordierite is widespread in the migmatites of Baie Jacques Cartier (BJC) and Baie des Ha! Ha! (BHH). In the BJC area, rafts of mesosome occur in a pervasive network of leucosome consisting of cordierite-bearing pegmatite. In BHH, however, the mesosome and leucosome are well segregated and locally separated by thin biotite -hornblende melanosomes.Leucosomes in the BJC area record the highest temperatures (oxide thermometry =900"C), whereas leucosomes of BHH and mesosomes of both areas indicate peak temperatures around 800°C (oxide thermometry; biotite-garnet thermometry with fluorine-rich biotite). Peak pressures were constrained at 720 MPa using the IlrnSil-Qtz-Grt-Rt (GRAIL) equilibrium.The area is thought to have undergone extensive melting under relatively modest pressures. The highest temperatures recorded in the BJC area are probably related to a pervasive impregnation of this terrane by aluminous granitic melts.Most post-peak P-T estimates for the mesosomes fall on a nearly isobaric, clockwise, P-T path (0.6 MPaPC) with the exception of the high-temperature leucosomes of BJC. which fall about 100°C away from this path; this is additional evidence for the external origin of these leucosomes. The ultimate source of heat that generated the migmatites is thus though to be an underlying plutonic complex (anorthosite?). We report an unusual occurrence of margarite, corundum, gahnite and zincohö gbomite from the Raleigh terrane in the Piedmont Province of Virginia. The assemblage occurs in a chlorite-rich blackwall associated with a small metamorphosed ultramafic rock body. The blackwall is dominated by chlorite, but also contains distinctive clusters (1À4 mm across) that typically consist of ragged Zn-rich spinel grains surrounded by masses of randomly oriented margarite. Also spatially associated with spinel are smaller grains of corundum and hö gbomite. In most cases, spinel and högbomite are sufficiently enriched in Zn to be called gahnite and zincohö gbomite, respectively. Some högbomite grains are distinctly banded in back-scattered electron images, primarily reflecting variations in Zncontent. Textures suggest that högbomite formed at the expense of spinel (although locally the reverse relationship holds), and hö gbomite compositions mimic those of spinel. Margarite appears to be a later phase, and textures imply formation via reactions with spinel, corundum and, possibly, chlorite. This occurrence of Zn-rich spinel and högbomite is clearly related to the bulk composition of the blackwall rock, which contains >2500 ppm Zn. The origin of this Zn-rich composition is unclear, but could be due to a small amount of sphalerite or zincian-staurolite in the protolith.
