Thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer in Graves’ disease

Abstract: Objective: The frequency of thyroid nodules accompanying Graves' disease and the risk of thyroid cancer in presence of accompanying nodules are controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of thyroid nodules and the risk of thyroid cancer in patients operated because of graves' disease. Subjects and methods: Five hundred and twenty-six patients in whom thyroidectomy was performed because of Graves' disease between 2006 and 2013 were evaluated retrospectively. Patients who had received rad… Show more

“…According to a recent study, the rate of FTC was 4% in patients with Graves' disease without a radiologically visible nodule (3). In another study, thyroid cancer was visualized in 5.4% of patients with Graves' disease having no visible thyroid nodule (2). A study showed that the incidence of the tall cell variant of PTC was high in the patients with Graves' disease (6).…”

“…In a retrospective study, the rate of thyroid cancer was 5.4% even in the patients with no radiologically evident thyroid nodule (2). Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is typically observed in patients with Graves' disease (2,3). In a study, the rate of follicular thyroid cancer (FTC) was reported to be 5% in patients with visible nodules and 4% in those without a visible nodule (3).…”

“…These 2 cascades exert mitogenic and antiapoptotic effects on thyroid follicular cells. By up-regulating vascular endothelial growth and placental factors, TRAb stimulates angiogenesis in the thyroid, which has a critical role in the growth and development of tumors in the thyroid [14,15]. Therefore, MMI therapy appears to be an effective therapy for controlling thyroid function and inhibiting the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer.…”

“…[12,13] Moreover, some authors reported that thyroid cancer associated with GD seemed to be more aggressive. [14,15] RAI therapy is recommended in high-risk differentiated thyroid carcinoma, [16] but it might worsen or induce a new onset of GO.…”
