Thyroid Lipomatosis

Abstract: Thyroid lipomatosis is a rare condition characterized by the presence of abundant mature adipose tissue in the thyroid gland. We herein report the case of a 43-year-old man with chronic renal failure caused by amyloidosis presenting with an asymmetrically enlarging thyroid gland. The patient's thyroid hormone levels were normal, and test results for thyroid autoantibodies were negative. A thyroid scan showed diffuse uptake of the radioisotope with a cold area in the left lobe. The pathology of the thyroidectom… Show more

“…Our patient showed amyloid deposits, which had been previously reported in two patients with secondary amyloidosis associated with chronic renal failure and hemodialysis in one case, and with Crohn's disease and kidney transplant in the other (7, 13). Two other reports describe amyloid goiters with diffuse infiltration by adipose tissue (14, 15).…”

“…Radiological studies were not diagnostic, but the ultrasound may reveal enlargement of the thyroid with diffuse increase in the echogenicity and attenuation of sound typical of fat [10], Computerized tomography of the thyroid may reveal low attenuation components with negative Hounsfield units [11].…”

“…Şeffaf hücreli adenomlarda, folliküler hücreler küçük oval nükleuslu geniş köpüksü veya vakuolize sitoplazma ile karakterizedir. Böyle durumlarda tiroglobulin kullanılarak tiroid folliküler hücrelerinin orjini tespit edilebilir [2,17,18].…”
