Thyroid hormone synthesis: a potential target of a Chinese herbal formula Haizao Yuhu Decoction acting on iodine-deficient goiter

Abstract: Haizao Yuhu Decoction (HYD), a famous multi-component herbal formula, has been widely used to treat various thyroid-related diseases, including iodine-deficient goiter. Herb pair Thallus Sargassi Pallidi (HZ) and Radix Glycyrrhizae (GC), one of the so-called “eighteen antagonistic medicaments”, contains in HYD. To explore pharmacological mechanisms of HYD acting on iodine-deficient goiter and to provide evidence for potential roles of herb pair HZ and GC in HYD, our genome-wide microarray detection and network… Show more

“…Network pharmacology, first proposed by Andrew L Hopkins 11 , has greatly promoted the mechanistic study of Traditional Chinese Medicine 12 14 . This approach has advantages in interpreting the synergistic effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with multiple components and multiple targets.…”

“…Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) formulae have been widely used in clinical practice for thousands of years due to their efficacy and lack of serious side effects, and are an indispensable part of the current medical service system ( Zhang Y. et al, 2016 ). One characteristic of TCM formulae is that they generally comprise multiple ingredients, which operate in synergy and on multiple disease targets ( Li and Zhang, 2013 ).…”

“…Although the mechanisms are not clear so far, it is considered as a multistep process involving thyroid hormone synthesis, antioxidative stress, and immunomodulatory effect [14, 16]. Notably, herb pair HZ-GC, as one of “eighteen antagonistic medicaments” which means that the two herbs should not be used in the same prescriptions in order to avoid mutually, has been demonstrated regulating targets into the synthesis of thyroid hormone [16], indicating the critical roles of this herb pair in HYD acting on goiter. The two different species of Sargassum , Sf and Sp, were studied for their pharmacological effects and acute toxicity [12].…”
