Thyroid Hormone and Alzheimer Disease: Bridging Epidemiology to Mechanism
Sergio Escamilla,
Federico Salas-Lucia
Abstract:The identification of critical factors that can worsen the mechanisms contributing to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s is paramount. Thyroid hormones (TH) fit this criterion. Epidemiological studies have identified an association between altered circulating TH levels and Alzheimer’s. The study of human and animal models indicates that TH can affect all the main cellular, molecular, and genetic mechanisms known as hallmarks of Alzheimer’s. This is true not only for the excessive production in the brain of pro… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
