The effects of short-and long-term (from 3 days to 28 weeks) administration of excess thyroxine in the form of the iodinated casein "Protamone" (0.2%) to rats on the content of soluble thyroid iodoproteins and on biosynthesis and polymerization of thyroid proteins in vitro were investigated.The concentration of soluble iodoproteins significantly increased (40\ p=n-\ 80%) up to 2 weeks of treatment, and after that remained at the same level. 27S iodoprotein markedly increased during thyroxine treatment. The content of DNA in the gland and the thyroid weight were a little lower in the treated rats than in the control.The incorporation rate of [14C]leucine into soluble and microsome-bound proteins in vitro was markedly reduced in the treated animals (30\p=n-\80 % of control). “…However, when high temperatures prevail, there is a decline in thyroid secretion rate (Johnson and Ragsdale, 1960;Thompson, Johnston, Freidenstein, Guidry and Banerjee, 1963). Thyroprotein, an iodinated casein containing about 1% thyroxine (Mischler and Reineke, 1970) was used as an appetite stimulant and hence to increase milk yield in dairy herds maintained in the temperate zones in the 1940's and 1950's (Blaxter, Reineke, Crampton and Petersen, 1949;Thomas, Kopland, Keyes and Moore, 1957;Thomas and Moore, 1953). INTRODUCTIONAs a consequence of the rapidly expanding population and the general recognition of the need for more efficient food production in the less developed countries, there is currently much interest in the establishment of intensive animal production units therein. However, traditional animal production enterprises in these countries, particularly in those with hot humid climates, are noted for their low productivity and poor reproductive rates. Consequently, only a few of the intensive units established in these locations have been successful. The most common factors associated with this failure are, inexperience in 'farming' animals, mismanagement, inappropriate animal types, inadequate housing and planning and ignorance of the deleterious effects of tropical environments on animals and production systems and on means of alleviating them.Ever since animals were domesticated, man realized that climatic changes resulted in dramatic influences on their behaviour and performance. In an attempt to ameliorate these effects, enormous energy has since been expended in the developed world in modifying traditional housing, feeding and management practices. However, the problems faced by animals in the tropics are particularly difficult, especially in the low income countries, not only because they are exposed to periods of extremely hot/humid weather but also because financial constraints have precluded the employment of many of the available methods of ameliorating the effects of climate on production. Clearly, the fate of many of these nations will depend on man's ability to overcome these difficulties. Thus far, research and development efforts have been mainly concerned with: * the importation of high producing animals or their genes from temperate regions, crossing them with tropically adapted species and subsequently selecting those that are adaptable and productive; * designing suitable housing to counteract the rigours of climate; and * developing the most efficient ways of animal management and feeding.The object of this paper is to briefly describe the physiological and productive responses of animals maintained in hot environments and to categorise the practical methods currently available of alleviating the depressive effects. The majority of the work quoted will relate to cattle. RESPONSE OF CATTLE TO HOT/HUMID TROPICAL.CLIMATESClimate is one of many features of the tropical environment which limit animal production; others include nutrition, endo-and ecto-parasites, disease, soil fertility, etc. (McDowell, 1968). A Simple Method for Monitoring Iodinated Casein in Feed Premixes by LC–MS Using Iodothyronines as Markers

A simple and effective liquid chromatographymass spectrometry method was devoleped for mornitoring iodinated casein (IC) in feed premixes. In this method, iodothyronines released from IC upon sample hydrolysis were used as markers. Samples were treated with Na 2 S and hydrolyzed with Ba(OH) 2 ÁH 2 O followed by cleaned up using a SampliQ SPE cartridge. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a C 18 column with isocratic elution using water (0.1% formic acid, v/v) and acetonitrile as the mobile phase. Ion detection was performed using electrospray ionization in positive mode using selected ion monitoring at m/z 606, 652, 732 and 778. IC levels were mornitored by qualitative analysis of the iodothyronines and quantification of thyroxine. Validation data demonstrated that the method was selective and sensitive (B0.5 mg g -1 ) with acceptable accuracy (70.2-128.2% recovery) and precison (RSD 5.5-15.2%).
