“…Iodinated casein "Protamone" (Agri-Tech. Kansas City, Missouri) as a source of thyroactive compounds, mainly as thyroxine (Mischler 8c Reineke 1970) was given to rats in a concentration of 0.2°/o in the diet for various time periods from 3 days to 28 weeks.…”

“…However, when high temperatures prevail, there is a decline in thyroid secretion rate (Johnson and Ragsdale, 1960;Thompson, Johnston, Freidenstein, Guidry and Banerjee, 1963). Thyroprotein, an iodinated casein containing about 1% thyroxine (Mischler and Reineke, 1970) was used as an appetite stimulant and hence to increase milk yield in dairy herds maintained in the temperate zones in the 1940's and 1950's (Blaxter, Reineke, Crampton and Petersen, 1949;Thomas, Kopland, Keyes and Moore, 1957;Thomas and Moore, 1953). This difference between high and low yielders is probably an extension of the situation seen under temperate conditions: serum thyroxine at peak lactation in cattle has been shown to be 54% of that of non-Iactating cows by the end of lactation (Lorscheider, Oxender and Reineke, 1969;Shaw, Convey, Tucker, Reineke, Thomas and Byrne, 1975).…”

“…Many analytical methods have been reported for the determination of idothyronines such as thin-layer chromatography (TLC) [9], gas chromatography (GC) [10], high performance liquid chromatogaphy (LC) [11], GC-or LCmass spectrometry (MS) with stable isotope-labeled analytes as internal standards [12,13]. Among the reported methods, TLC and LC have insufficient selectivity and sensitivity for the purpose of monitoring IC in feed matrixes.…”
