Thymoma and thymic carcinoma associated with multilocular thymic cyst: a clinicopathologic analysis of 18 cases

Abstract: BackgroundMultilocular thymic cysts (MTCs) associated with thymomas or thymic carcinomas (TCs) are rare and may be misdiagnosed as other benign cystic lesions.MethodsWe retrospectively analysed 18 cases of thymomas or TCs associated with MTCs, which were retrieved from 309 consecutive patients with thymomas or TCs in the Chinese population, emphasizing clinicopathologic characteristics, immunophenotypes and the prognostic impact.ResultsA total of 14 tumours were described as cystic or solid-cystic masses, and … Show more

“…Next, the reconstructed images are obtained from the projected data by back projection operation [23][24][25]. For the specific slices in one of the layers of the reconstructed object, the attenuation coefficients of the ray corresponding to all points on the loading surface can be reconstructed by projection values [26,27]. R 0 refers to the velocity before the ray passes through an object, R denotes the intensity after the ray passes through an object, and φ (x, y) represents the linear attenuation index of substance to ray at (x, y).…”

“…On the other hand, in our case, it is probable that embolism which occurred in the thymus resulted in necrosis and chest pain. Shen et al argued that the formation of MTCs was closely related to inflammation and there might be a histological association between MTCs and thymic neoplasms according to the results of immunohistochemical staining [ 11 , 12 ]. Thus, it was possible that this embolism also caused inflammatory changes and MTCs occurred in the thymoma.…”

“…In the present case, we highly suspected a malignant thymic epithelial tumor based on its growing nature ( 7 ) and high metabolic activity ( 2 ). Furthermore, we assumed that the growing nodule could be associated with the adjacent thymic cyst ( 1 ).…”

“…An association between the thymic cyst and thymic epithelial tumors has been reported ( 1 ). 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) has been widely used to differentiate benign from malignant lesions in thymic pathology ( 2 ).…”
