Thunderstorm‐related asthma can occur in New Zealand

Abstract: Thunderstorm asthma is induced by specific weather conditions causing breakdown and widespread distribution of allergens. Thunderstorm asthma had previously been considered unlikely to occur in New Zealand (NZ), given its local weather patterns. Storm events on 2 December 2017 led to increased asthma presentations at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton. Analyses of patient presentations led us to conclude that these presentations were similar to international descriptions of thunderstorm asthma. This is the first tim… Show more

“…But there are also reports of cases with distinctly less asthma-related emergencies, e.g. seven cases in Naples were reported by D'Amato et al (2008) or 14 in New Zealand by Sabih et al (2020). For the latter, it can be expected that they did not lead to a capacity overload of medical care services.…”

These events were accompanied by five to tenfold increases in admission numbers of asthma patients in emergency units.…”

“…What is more, lower air pressure tends to occur during extreme weather, such as thunderstorms, which has been linked to asthma exacerbations, known as "thunderstorm asthma." [37][38][39] Studies of weather events have found that thunderstorm would increase the levels of respiratory allergens present in the air, particularly pollen and mold spores. 37,40 Conditions at the beginning of a thunderstorm can cause pollen grains to rupture, increasing the concentration of pollen debris.…”

“…These findings suggest that past increases in particulate matter concentration and temperature may be the dominant mechanism of storm-associated acute respiratory illness in older Americans, which may contribute to a burden on the health care system as storm activity increases with storm, increase in global temperatures [36]. Thunderstorm was considered unlikely to occur in New Zealand due to its local weather patterns, but events on 2 nd December 2017 led to an increase in asthma hospitalizations at Waikato Hospital in Hamilton, with similar presentations to international descriptions of asthma by storm [44]. Ali et al [35] reported cases of near-fatal and fatal asthma caused by storms in Kuwait on December 1 st , 2016; 17 patients were admitted with near-fatal asthma, 93.8% had a previous history of asthma, with an average duration of 9 years, 33.3% reported receiving inhaled corticosteroids from their physician and 93.8% relying only on a short-acting β2-agonist to control their asthma; 68.8% reported being outdoors during the storm and eleven patients were diagnosed with fatal asthma.…”
