A aucun moment, l'A. n'y fait allusion au cours de ses propres explications. Je considère légitime de montrer qu'elle n'était pas justifiée à passer sous silence une argumentation qui aurait pu lui éviter d'égarer un lecteur non averti. Toutefois, on verra que la relecture à laquelle j'ai été obligé n'a pas été inutile et m'a permis de corriger quelques imprécisions anciennes. Je remercie donc Mme Darbo-Peschanski de ce point de vue-là.Sur un premier aspect, sa lecture est plus précise que ne l'a été la mienne : elle attire avec raison l'attention sur le fait que les hommes rassemblés sur la place sont des hommes de troupe (lao°), qu'ils forment deux partis, l'un en faveur du meurtrier qui prétend payer une rançon (je reviendrai sur ce sens ci-dessous), l'autre, le défenseur de l'homme tué qu'une telle réparation ne satisfait pas.Cette précision invite à expliciter quels sont les rôles en présence dans la scène. Désignons d'abord les deux hommes en procès, non pour juger d'un meurtre, mais des modalités de paiement pour le meurtre que chacune des parties pourra légitimement réclamer (condamnation à mort du meurtrier, exil, paiement d'une rançon). Il apparaîtra plus loin que c'est là le seul objet possible du procès. L'un est le poursuivant (diōkōn), l'autre le défenseur ou, dans notre terminologie, l'accusé (pheugōn). Comment ils jouent leur rôle, comment ils ne plaident pas leur cause, par exemple, c'est ce que nous déduirons de la lecture de la scène, en nous en tenant strictement à ce que nous dit l'aède.Autour des deux adversaires sont rassemblés les hommes en armes du territoire (lawoi). Ces hommes se sont partagés en deux partis, en faveur de chacun des deux adversaires. Ces derniers acceptent de suivre la même procédure (de suivre le même chemin, de s'élancer sur la même piste 3 ) pour mettre un terme à leur querelle : d'un commun accord, ils accepteront comme verdict la sentence, qui fera d'un géronte un histōr.Alors les hérauts font reculer les hommes de la troupe, ménagent un espace central où s'installent des gérontes, des hommes que...
