Field work in the South-Central Pyrenees suggests that omission contacts (i.e. younger over older rocks) occur at the base of the Cadí unit (Cadí thrust), and pass laterally into thrusts. This change occurs across tear faults which are present in the hangingwall of the Cadí thrust sheet and which controlled the deposition of Upper Cretaceous sediments (Adraén formation). Detailed mapping in the contact area between the Nogueres and Cadí units has shown that the actual thrust geometry in the study area is controlled by preexisting normal and transfer faults which developed in an already compressional context. Lateral ramps or tear faults develop depending on the angle between the pre-existing extensional transfer fault and the thrust transport direction.

Drainage reorganization and divide migration induced by the excavation of the Ebro basin (NE Spain)

Abstract. Intracontinental endorheic basins are key elements of source-to-sink systems as they preserve sediments eroded from the surrounding catchments. Drainage reorganization in such a basin in response to changing boundary conditions has strong implications on the sediment routing system and on landscape evolution. The Ebro and Duero basins represent two foreland basins, which developed in response to the growth of surrounding compressional orogens, the Pyrenees and the Cantabrian mountains to the north, the Iberian Ranges to the south, and the Catalan Coastal Range to the east. They were once connected as endorheic basins in the early Oligocene. By the end of the Miocene, new post-orogenic conditions led to the current setting in which the Ebro and Duero basins are flowing in opposite directions, towards the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Although these two hydrographic basins recorded a similar history, they are characterized by very different morphologic features. The Ebro basin is highly excavated, whereas relicts of the endorheic stage are very well preserved in the Duero basin. The contrasting morphological preservation of the endorheic stage represents an ideal natural laboratory to study the drivers (internal and/or external) of post-orogenic drainage divide mobility, drainage network, and landscape evolution. To that aim, we use field and map observations and we apply the χ analysis of river profiles along the divide between the Ebro and Duero drainage basins. We show here that the contrasting excavation of the Ebro and Duero basins drives a reorganization of their drainage network through a series of captures, which resulted in the southwestward migration of their main drainage divide. Fluvial captures have a strong impact on drainage areas, fluxes, and their respective incision capacity. We conclude that drainage reorganization driven by the capture of the Duero basin rivers by the Ebro drainage system explains the first-order preservation of endorheic stage remnants in the Duero basin, due to drainage area loss, independently from tectonics and climate.

The present study reports a sedimentological analysis of the Guara Limestone Formation deposited during the Lutetian in the Sierras Exteriores, in the South-Pyrenean foreland basin. We provide a detailed facies analysis of the carbonates to precise the paleoenvironmental context during their deposition. We show that those limestones are mainly composed of shallow-water foraminifers and were deposited in relative shallow-water environments (b120 m) during the whole Lutetian (SBZ 13 to SBZ 16). The Guara Limestone Formation represents the last occurrence of carbonate platform in the South-Pyrenean foreland basin and disappeared definitely at the Lutetian to Bartonian transition. The demise of carbonate producers at the end of the Lutetian could be related to an increase of continental erosion, due to tectonic and/or climatic forcing. We illustrate that in the Jaca basin, this event correlates with a marked increase in subsidence rate. However, this deformation event is local and the carbonate systems in the Pyrenean foreland resisted to many deformation events during the whole basin history before. Paleobathymetric reconstructions in the Jaca basin, where shallow marine sections outcrop, suggest an increase of the amplitude of high-frequency sea-level cycles. This increase is contemporaneous with several climatic evidences, which suggest the appearance of early ice-sheets near the Lutetian-Bartonian boundary. The demise of carbonate producers seems, therefore, to be the result of a major environmental shift in the basin accompanying increased subsidence rates, switching from low nutrient oligotrophic conditions -favourable for shallow water benthic foraminifers -to eutrophic conditions due to the increase of erosion and terrigenous nutrient input associated with higher-frequency sea-level changes and river destabilization.
