Thrombotic complications in patients with cancer: Advances in pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment—A report from ICTHIC 2021

Abstract: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication in cancer patients, resulting in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), and is responsible for high morbidity and mortality. This article discusses evidence and future perspectives on pathogenesis and prevention and treatment of thrombotic complications in patients with cancer. In April 2021, international basic researchers and clinicians met for the virtual edition of the 10th International Conference on Thrombosis & Hemostasis Issues in Ca… Show more

“…All the mechanisms described above, together with other general factors, such as the compression stasis of the tumour mass, infections, and bed rest, may contribute to the hypercoagulable state of OSCC patients. However, a paradoxical situation has been described for OSCC patients because, unlike other types of cancer, they seem to present a low incidence of thrombosis [ 1 , 2 , 3 ].…”

“…Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is an impaired venous reflux disorder caused by abnormal clotting of blood in the deep veins that has a significant negative impact on a patient's safety and quality of life. 1 3 Hence, it is of particular importance to evaluate the risk factors of DVT before thrombosis and take effective clinical measures to prevent, find, and treat DVT in time.…”
