Thrombosis: A major contributor to global disease burden

Abstract: Thrombosis is a common pathology underlying ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and venous thromboembolism (VTE). The Global Burden of Disease Study 2010 (GBD 2010) documented that ischemic heart disease and stroke collectively caused one in four deaths worldwide. GBD 2010 did not report data for VTE as a cause of death and disability. We performed a systematic review of the literature on the global disease burden due to VTE in low, middle and high income countries. Studies from Western Europe, North Amer… Show more

“…21 Moreover, Japan has the lowest incidence of acute myocardial infarction among industrialized countries, 22 and the incidence of venous thromboembolism is lower in individuals in East Asia than in Western countries. 23 Therefore, it is necessary to review our experience with UGTI for iatrogenic PSA to evaluate its safety and efficacy in Japan. UGTI is associated with a high frequency of PSA obliteration, low recurrence and rare complications, 9-15 and is recommended as the initial treatment in patients with large and/or symptomatic femoral artery PSA.…”

“…Accordingly, CVD is a leading cause of death in the earlier stage of the disease 3. Thrombosis, in turn, is the most frequent underlying mechanism of the three major CVDs: ischemic heart disease, stroke, and venous thromboembolism,4 which raises the question whether blood markers involved in the pathogenesis of thrombosis are linked to COPD.…”

“…Os estudos reportaram incidências anuais de TEV variando entre 0,75 e 2,69 a cada 1.000 indivíduos da população. A maioria dos estudos reportou incidências na faixa de 1,07 a 1,83 casos a cada 1.000 indivíduos, o que está em linha com o valor assumido no presente estudo (Raskob et al, 2014).…”
