Thrombophilic factors in ischaemic and non-ischaemic idiopathic retinal vasculitis

Abstract: Two common causes of visual loss in idiopathic retinal vasculitis (RV) are retinal ischaemia and cystoid macular oedema. This study investigated whether thrombophilic factors are more prevalent in patients with ischaemic RV than non-ischaemic RV. Twenty patients with RV (10 ischaemic, 10 non-ischaemic) were prospectively recruited before starting systemic immunosuppression. Twenty-one different haemostatic parameters were tested. Seventeen patients had at least one haemostatic abnormality. Three patients had l… Show more

“…Morphological changes in the retinal vascular endothelium similar to HEV have been found during EAU and EAE at sites of perivascular inflammation [46,133] and the expression of ICAM‐1and E‐ and P‐selectins on retinal vascular endothelium correlates with the stage and location of leucocyte adhesion and blood–retinal barrier breakdown in EAU [156]. Furthermore, blocking of ICAM‐1 and LFA‐1 with monoclonal antibodies inhibits EAU.…”

“…It is interesting to note that smoking was found to play an important role in ischemic idiopathic retinal vasculitis, a rare infl ammatory disorder that causes visual loss as a result of retinal ischemia and cystoid macular edema [181] . Cigarette smoking was also identifi ed as a risk factor for the development of idiopathic ophthalmoplegia, which results from a decrease in blood supply to the extraocular muscles and their consequent functional paresis [13] .…”
