The mechanism of polyurethane-induced thrombocytopenia is probably immunological in view of a) the delay between exposure and the onset of thrombocytopenic purpura (in this case and the previous cases of toluene di-isocyanate exposure [4]); b) the increase in megakaryocytes in the bone marrow (in this and previous cases [4]); c j the lack of response to a platelet transfusion but cure by splenectomy in a previous case [4]; and, d) the response to steroids and high-dose immune globulin in the present case.…”
