“…Early in the epidemic, Duliege and colleagues [14] raised awareness with their report that a number of factors, including bacterial, viral or opportunistic infections, nutritional diseases, neurological disorders, and thrombocytopenia, might be associated with HIV related causes of death among children in California. Similarly, although not the original purpose of the report, a high mortality rate was evident in Rigaud's series [162] in which 36% of the thrombocytopenic children died. While HIV mortality was quite high early in the HIV epidemic, the overall rate of mortality seems to be even higher in this thrombocytopenic group.…”

“…It has been suggested by the New York State Department of Health [102], among others, that antiretroviral therapy be the primary treatment of HIV-associate thrombocytopenia unless it has proven to be ineffective or the patient requires an immediate increase in platelets. Even so, zidovudine responses in children with thrombocytopenia seem to be poorer than those observed in adults [162]. According to Rigaud [162], only 30% of HIV infected thrombocytopenic children responded to zidovudine treatment for a period of 3-20 months (Table 1).…”

“…À semelhança do que é referido em literatura 9,16 , observou-se plaquetopenia em 10 a 25% das crianças. Em adultos, tal freqüência varia de 8 a 30% 38 .…”
