Thrombocyte monoamine oxidase activity and personality traits in women with severe premenstrual syndrome

Abstract: Women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS) of such severity that they actively had sought medical attention for their symptoms were compared with healthy female students with regard to platelet MAO activity and temperamental correlates by means of the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP), scales from the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) and Eysenck's IVE inventory. The women with PMS were divided into two groups; irritability and depression as predominating symptom. No variation in platelet MAO was found … Show more

“…PCR reactions with subsequent estimations of allelic genotypes, and radiometric assay of catalytic trbc MAO activity with 14 C-␤-phenylethylamine as substrate were carried out as previously described. 54,63 Intron 2 genotypes for AP-2␤, KSP scores and trbc MAO activity were determined for all individuals. In the binge-eating patients, four patients (9%) were homozygous for the short AP-2␤ intron 2 allele, 13 patients (28%) were heterozygous, and 29 patients (63%) were homozygous for the long allele.…”

“…Thereafter, platelet concentrations of the plasma samples were estimated electronically and the plasma stored at -80°C. Catalytic activity of platelet MAO was analysed by a radiometric assay with 14 C-labelled 2-phenylethylamine (ß-PEA) as substrate, as previously described [24]. Briefly, 50 Ìl of sonicated plasma was added to 50 Ìl of 0.1 mM 14 C-ß-PEA (0.5 ÌCi/ml) in 0.1 M sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.8.…”

“…These authors, using the Eysenck Personality Inventory, found that the severity of perimenstrual mood symptoms was highly related with neuroticism [24], a personality trait reflecting a condition of ill-being and often related to the presence of a psychiatric disorder (in particular a depressive disorder), and a tendency to seek medical help for these problems [25]. The correlation between neuroticism and LLPD has also been reported by other authors [26, 27, 28, 29, 30], whereas some studies did not find any differences between women with LLPD and asymptomatic controls in terms of neuroticism [31, 32]. Moreover, while some studies, which attempted to evaluate the personality correlates of LLPD by using standardized assessment instruments, reported a low prevalence of comorbid Axis II personality disorders in women with this condition [28, 33, 34], others found that passive-aggressive, borderline-cycloid, hypomanic traits were higher in LLPD women as compared to matched controls [35].…”
