Thromboangiitis obliterans: Aggressive angioplasty provides a potential solution (randomized pilot study)

Abstract: Background: Thromboangiitis obliterans is an inflammatory disease affecting both medium- and small-sized vessels. Vasodilators, antiplatelets were proposed for treatment but the effect was minimal. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effect of balloon angioplasty on patients with Buerger’s disease compared to medical treatment. Methods: Between January 2006 and December 2016, 82 patients with Buerger’s disease were enrolled in the study, of whom 52 were randomized to the aggressive endovascu… Show more

“…TAO is a chronic nonatherosclerotic segmental obliteritis, and the excessive oxidation of vascular endothelial cells (VEC) is one of the most important causes for TAO thrombosis. 23 Chronic and excessive inflammatory activation of the endothelium can have harmful effects on the vascular system, leading to endothelial dysfunction and the progression of atherosclerotic lesions. 24,25 There is evidence that TAO is related to the damage of VEC, and the excessive oxidation of VEC induced by H 2 O 2 is one of the main factors leading to the damage and apoptosis of VEC, and the induction of H 2 O 2 is also one of the important reasons to promote the thrombosis of TAO in the vessels.…”
