Three-year Outcomes of the Innovative Replacement of Incontinence Surgery Procedure for Treatment of Female Stress Urinary Incontinence: Comparison with Tension-free Vaginal Tape Procedure

Abstract: Innovative replacement of incontinence surgery (IRIS) is a polypropylene tape that is placed beneath the midurethra to restore urinary continence. We evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of the IRIS procedure and compared it with tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) for the treatment of female stress urinary incontinence. We included all 66 consecutive women who underwent IRIS (n=34) or TVT (n=32) between February 2002 and April 2003 and followed them up for at least 3 yr postoperatively. The 3-yr success ra… Show more

“…All patients deemed as failures (one in each group) had severe subjective SUI and a low VLPP (<60 cm H 2 O) before surgery. In agreement with other authorities [21,27] , our study states that whatever the sling material, mid-urethral support is not enough to treat higher degrees of ISD, implying severe stress incontinence, unlike mild to moderate cases with mainly anatomical defects that had very good results.…”

“…For intraoperative bleeding, operative duration and hospital stay there were significant differences favouring the prolene sling, then AVS and ARS. Bladder perforation occurred in two patients (groups 1 and 3), giving an overall rate of 6%, higher than the 3.8% reported by others [20,21] , who noted that previous pelvic surgery is a risk factor for urethral and bladder injuries [22] , although a rate of <10% was reported by others [23] .…”

“…The stress cough test was performed with the patient in the standing position with a full bladder. The patients' perception of satisfaction was categorized as "very satisfied," "satisfied," "so-so," or "dissatisfied," with both very satisfied and satisfied considered as satisfaction [8]. Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS (Windows version 13.0; SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA).…”
