Three Waves of Awkwardness: A Meta-Analysis of Sex in Game Studies

Abstract: This article critically evaluates and questions the growth and maturity of game studies as a scholarly set of related approaches to the study of games, by providing an account of studies of sexuality in (mostly digital) games from 1978 to present. The main goal of this article is to highlight overarching themes and patterns in the literature, with a focus on theories and methodologies commonly used and the way game studies is still risk aware, even awkward in its discussions of sexuality. In addition to a revi… Show more

“…In exploring the research question how GSEs function as a form of play and how lifestyler group sex practitioners learn and negotiate the rules present in such situations, we answer an implicit call for game studies to engage with sexuality, something still done only rarely (e.g., Harviainen, Brown, & Suominen, 2016).…”

“…Within game studies, sexuality and play have been mainly discussed in the context of games featuring sexual content (in terms of representations, tasks, goals and plotlines connected to, or making use of sexuality), in terms of in-game sexual dynamics, variations of sexual play and play with sexuality in game environments, as well as the economies of desire, forms of intimacy, bodily intensity and unruly gender performativity that all these afford.
