Three sudden deaths in men associated with undiagnosed chronic thyroiditis

Abstract: Three cases of sudden death associated with undiagnosed chronic thyroiditis are described. All were young or middle-aged men who were found dead, and death appeared to have occurred suddenly. Two of them had not previously experienced any serious medical problems, the third suffered from well-controlled Addison's disease. None had been investigated or treated for thyroid disease previously. Microscopically all showed a severe chronic thyroiditis with parenchymal destruction and reactive hyperplasia of the acin… Show more

“…Such an undiagnosed chronic thyroiditis has been described in cases of sudden death [4] and in our case, postmortem biochemistry results were consistent with Hashimoto's disease. Edston et al [5] showed that it is possible to use postmortem measurements of thyroid function in combination with histology but postmortem thyroxin and TSH blood levels must be carefully interpreted.…”

“…Hypokalemia can be a cause of ventricular fibrillation in Cushing's syndrome [395]. Thyroid-related heart disease is recognized [396,397], but there has been recent interest in an apparent association between chronic thyroiditis and sudden death [398][399][400]. Death due to presumed arrhythmia has been noted in association with thyrotoxicosis [39] and abuse of thyroid hormone [401].…”

“…Recently studies about the postmortem applications of other markers (thyroid hormones, biogenic amines and antioxidant related enzymes) involved in sudden death have been published (Edston 1996;Hirvonen and Huttunen 1996;Ramos et al 1997).…”
