Three New Triterpene Esters from Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima) Seeds

Abstract: Three new multiflorane-type triterpene esters, i.e. 7α-hydroxymultiflor-8-ene-3α,29-diol 3-acetate-29-benzoate (1), 7α-methoxymultiflor-8-ene-3α,29-diol 3,29-dibenzoate (2), and 7β-methoxymultiflor-8-ene-3α,29-diol 3,29-dibenzoate (3), were isolated from seeds of Cucurbita maxima, along with the known compound, multiflora-7,9(11)-diene-3α,29-diol 3,29-dibenzoate (4). Compound 1 exhibited melanogenesis inhibitory activities comparable with those of arbutin. In cytotoxicity assays, compounds 1 and 3 exhibited we… Show more

“…(2013) reported the presence of malutiflorane‐type triterpenoids, 3α‐ p ‐nitrobenzoylmultiflora‐7:9(11)‐diene‐29‐benzoate, 3α‐acetoxymultiflora‐7:9(11)‐diene‐29‐benzoate, and 3α‐acetoxymultiflora‐5(6):7: 9(11)‐triene‐29‐benzoate from pumpkin seed. Three new multiflorane‐type triterpene esters, 7α‐hydroxymultiflor‐8‐ene‐3α,29‐diol 3‐acetate‐29‐benzoate, 7α‐methoxymultiflor‐8‐ene‐3α,29‐diol 3,29‐dibenzoate, and 7β‐methoxymultiflor‐8‐ene‐3α,29‐diol 3,29‐dibenzoate, were identified from pumpkin seed (Kikuchi et al., 2014). Furthermore, Kikuchi et al.…”

“…The polyphenolic extract at concentrations >200 µg/mL was also shown to inhibit the intracellular activity of tyrosinase and the synthesis of melanin in B16F10 murine melanoma cells, however it also significantly reduced the viability of the cells at concentrations > 100 µg/mL. [ 37 ] Kikuchi and colleagues isolated the multiflorane-type triterpene from C. maxima seeds, which showed inhibitory effects on the α-MSH-induced melanogenesis in the B16 melanoma cell line [ 38 ] The skin-lightening potential of Cucurbita spp. was also investigated, with respect to the red pumpkin ( C. maxima ) seed extract.…”

“…Furthermore, they have shown to improve the iron status (34) and have blood-coagulatory effects (6,35). Their multiflorane-type triterpenes have melanogenesis inhibitory activity and thus may be potential skin whitening agents (36). Pumpkin seed oil has shown to be effective for the treatment of hair growth in male patients with mild to moderate androgenetic alopecia (37).…”
