Three new species of Pleurothallis (Orchidaceae: Pleurothallidinae) in subsection Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae from northern South America

Abstract: The history of the taxonomy of Pleurothallis R.Br. subsection Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae and recent descriptions in that group are summarized. The phylogenetic position of the group based on preliminary molecular data and the appropriateness of the proposed genera Acronia C.Presl. and Zosterophyllanthos Szlach. & Marg. for this group are discussed. Three new species from northern South America are described: Pleurothallis rubrifolia from southeastern Ecuador and northeastern Peru; Pleurothallis nangaritzae … Show more

“…Luer (1986) commented that the glenion was often "shiny or sticky" and opined that "undoubtedly it plays a part in attracting pollinators". Using SEM, Wilson et al (2016) They hypothesized that the glenion "acts not just to attract the pollinator but that it serves to position the pollinator in the optimal position for pollinarium acquisition or deposition." Wilson et al (2018) further noted that the vast majority of species in subsection Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae possess such a glenion.…”

“…In none of the observations of living plant material or numerous photographs of the three species have we ever seen any evidence of a liquid nectar-like reward. Nor did SEM indicate the presence of even a vestigial nectary or "glenion" as occurs in Pleurothallis subsections Macrophyllae-Fasciculatae (Wilson et al 2016) and Acroniae (Wilson unpubl. data), or any other possible secretory tissue (Fig.…”

“…The labella of P. talpinaria, P. trimeroglossa and the new species were compared in detail by stereo-microscopy, macro-photography and SEM. Flowers for SEM were prepared as described previously (Wilson et al 2016).…”

“…Whilst the phylogenetic relationships among the different subsets of species artificially gathered in this study is not granted, they can nevertheless be easily distinguished as a group from other assemblages of taxa. Informally circumscribed, this group includes some 35 species, distributed from Costa Rica to Peru and Bolivia, with the highest diversity recorded in the northern Andes of Colombia and Ecuador (Luer 2005, Wilson et al 2016.…”
