Three new species of Onosma L. (Boraginaceae) from Iran

Abstract: In this paper, we present some important findings in Onosma sect. Onosma. Data were collected during several surveys in western and northwestern Iran. Three new species were discovered and are illustrared here, namely O. sheidaii sp. nov and O. azarbaidjanensis sp. nov (in subsect. Haplotricha) and O. mozaffariani sp. nov. (In subsect. Heterotricha). An extensive review of literature and the comparative study with specimens kept in 14 Asiatic and European herbaria lead to the assessment of their independent, s… Show more

“…Simultaneously, Fedorov (2001) in Flora of Russia, accepted two subsections: Onosma and Haplotricha. In Iran, Onosma is represented by 46 species (Khatamsaz 2002, Attar and Joharchi 2006, Attar and Hamzehee 2007, Mehrabian et al 2013, 2015.…”

“…There are several taxonomical complexes (Kolarčik et al., and ) and some ambiguity in identification and differentiation of the taxa (Riedl et al. ; Mehrabian et al., ) that has resulted from interspecific hybridization (Kolarčik et al., and ). In addition, lack of efficient diagnostic keys and overlaps in morphological characteristics (Kolarcik et al., 2010) have created numerous challenges to the systematic of the genus.…”

“…During plant exploration trips in Iran, the authors collected specimens of Onosma. After critical studies some of them were found to differ from all the known species of the genus (Boissier 1879, Riedl 1967, 1979, Popov 1974, Khatamsaz 1992, Ranjbar and Almasi 2013, 2014). These latter are described and illustrated as a new species here.…”

“…The genus Onosma comprises about 230 species, mainly distributed in southwest Asia, the Mediterranean region and temperate Europe (Boissier , Riedl , Peruzzi and Passalacqua , Binzet et al , Mehrabian et al , Ranjbar and Almasi ). In ‘Flora Iranica’ (Riedl ) 38 species from Iran were treated under the three sections Protonosma Popv., Podonosma (Boiss.)…”
