Three new species of Helicopsyche von Siebold (Trichoptera: Helicopsychidae) from Brazil

Abstract: Three new species of Helicopsyche subgenus Feropsyche (Trichoptera: Helicopsychidae) from southern and southeastern Brazil are diagnosed, described, and illustrated: Helicopsyche angeloi sp. nov. , in having similarly shaped inferior appendages. However, the new species differs in the morphology and distribution of setae on the inferior appendages and tergum X. Helicopsyche lazzariae sp. nov. is unlike any other described species in the subgenus Feropsyche because of its broad deltoid-shaped inferior appendage… Show more

“…The new species is morphologically similar to Helicopsyche cipoensis Malm, 2006 andH. guara Holzenthal, Blahnik &Calor, 2016 by general shape of abdominal segment X and inferior appendage in lateral view, but differs from them by abdominal segment X trapezoid, apex with shallow concavity, not forming lobes, in dorsal view (Fig. 5j) (rectangular, with apex rounded in H. cipoensis, and subtriangular, with apex with very short, deep apical cleft forming two lobes covered by setae in H. guara); and basomesal lobe of inferior appendage base 1.5x as wide as apex, apex wide and truncated, in ventral view (Fig.…”

“…Methods used in the preparation, examination, and illustration followed Blahnik et al (2003) and Blahnik & Holzenthal (2004). The terminology applied to the morphological structures followed Johanson (2002), except for inferior appendage (rather than gonocoxite), as suggested by Holzenthal et al (2016) (Supplementary Material -Fig. S1).…”

“…Descriptions were made using the DELTA system (Dallwitz et al 1999). The terminology applied to the morphological structures of adults follows Johanson (1998), with adaptations of Holzenthal et al (2016), and immature follows Monson et al (1988) and Waringer et al (2017). The type specimens will be deposited at the following institutions: Museu de Zoologia da Universidade São Paulo, São Paulo (MZSP), Museu de História Natural da Bahia, Universidade Federal da Bahia, Salvador (UFBA), Coleção Entomológica Prof. José Alfredo Pinheiro Dutra, Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro (DZRJ), and Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazônia, Manaus (INPA), as indicated in the material examined section.…”
