In this paper, the genus Mediolata Canestrini (Acari: Stigmaeidae) of Russia is revised. Mediolata neocalifornica sp.n. is described based on female and male collected from the bark of various trees in Western Siberia. Female and male of Mediolata pini Canestrini, 1889, as well as females of Mediolata conserva Kuznetsov, 1977, M. similans Gonzalez- Rodriguez, 1965, and M. granaria Gonzalez-Rodriguez, 1965 are redescribed based on materials from Russia. Mediolata granaria is recorded from Russia for the first time. A key to the species of Mediolata is provided.

Stigmaeidae is one of the most studied mite families in Acarology, with the number of described species increasing by 44 percent in the last twenty years. To summarize the taxonomic and biological research in this family we compiled a catalogue with annotated information to nomenclature, synonymies, type localities, type depositories, host/habitat, feeding habits (if applicable) and distribution of 577 species in 34 genera (up to 31 July 2016). We also provide an overview of the main revisions and reviews. To facilitate future taxonomic research we present a pictorial key to genera. The following nomenclature changes are made: Raphignathus siculus var. lapponica Trägårdh, 1910 and Wooderia philippica Rimando & Corpuz-Raros, 1997 transferred to Eustigmaeus Berlese, Mullederia makilingae Rimando & Corpuz-Raros, 1996 transferred to Indostigmaeus Gupta & Ghosh.

Five raphignathoid (Acari: Raphignathoidea) mite species, including three of family Stigmaeidae, Eustigmaeus rhodomela (KOCH), Mediolata obtecta DÖNEL and DOÐAN, Stigmaeus glabrisetus SUMMERS, one of Cryptognathidae, Favognathus cucurbita (BERLESE), and one of Barbutiidae, Barbutia anguineus (BERLESE), are recorded as new for the Polish fauna. This is the first report of the family Barbutiidae from Poland.
