Three New Homoisoflavanone Glycosides from the Bulbs of Ornithogalum caudatum

Abstract: Phytochemical examination of Ornithogalum caudatum led to the isolation of three new homoisoflavanone glycosides. Their structures were elucidated, on the basis of the spectroscopic data and chemical evidence and by comparing them with those of known compounds, as (-)-7-O-methyleucomol 5-O-beta-D-glucopyranoside (1), (-)-7-O-methyleucomol 5-O-beta-rutinoside (2), and (-)-7-O-methyleucomol 5-O-beta-neohesperidoside (3), respectively.

“…5e). These evidences indicated that OcUGT1 did catalyze the synthesis of UDP-Glc (20). Moreover, OcUGT1 were observed to be promiscuous towards glycosyl donors, as exemplified in Supplementary result section XII, in which the glycosyl group (20), forming oNP-β-Glc (16) (Fig.…”

“…O. caudatum, also named O. longibracteatum, is known in Chinese folk medicine to have anticancer, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities 19 . Prior studies revealed that varied flavonoid glycosides, including flavonoid glucosides, galactosides, arabinosides and rutinosides were present in O. caudatum [19][20][21] , suggesting the existence of corresponding flavonoid GTs. Thus, O. caudatum was chosen as the plant template for flavonoid GTs isolation in the present work.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, no biological and phytochemical investigation has been carried out on O. sintenisii. However, previous studies on some other Ornithogalum species revealed the presence of steroidal glycosides [4,5], monoterpene lactone [6] and homoisoflavanone [7], some of which were found to possess antimicrobial, cytotoxic, cytostatic, anticancer, antioxidant, mould-inhibiting and insect deterrent properties [4,8]. The objective of this study was to determine some antioxidant properties of O. sintenisii bulbs and aerial parts using a set of in vitro antioxidant assays including scavenging of DPPH, nitric oxide and hydrogen peroxide, as well as reducing power, linoleic acid peroxidation test and iron ion chelating power.…”

“…Now, it is widely cultivated as a medicinal value just like aloe vera (Tang et al, 2002;Chen et al, 2010). Recently, saponins isolated from O. caudatum are being used to cure lung cancer, breast cancer, and their anticancer activity has been documented.…”
