Two multiple drug resistant Enterobacter cloacae isolates (Nos. 460 and 493) varied phenotypically in bacteriocin susceptibility in the absence of significant·antigen variation. Both isolates were susceptible to chloramphenicol, nitrofurantoin, polymyxin B, nalidixic acid, norfloxacin, and enoxacin only. One isolate carried a non-conjugative resistance (R) plasmid, whereas the other isolate contained a conjugative, ‘curable’ R plasmid and a cryptic plasmid. Both wild-type isolates constitutively produced a chromosomal cephalosporinase (nitrocefin hydrolysis); ‘cured’ variants of E. cloacae isolate No. 493, which had become susceptible for lamoxactam, produced a cefazolin-inducible β-lactamase. The two E. cloacae isolates, including their ‘cured’ variants, were of low-grade virulence for outbred NMRI mice. Both isolates differed somewhat in susceptibility to defibrinated human blood. Inhibitory (0.25 μg/ml), but not subinhibitory (0.125 μg/ml) concentrations of norfloxacin and enoxacin combined with human blood yielded additive effects against both E. cloacae isolates.

The field of criminology lacks a sense of its own history. To rectify this situation, I apply the concepts and framework of the life-course perspective to the development of criminology as a discipline. Examining criminology in the United States over the last 100 years, I discuss three eras (or life-course phases), intellectual continuities and turning points in the field. My thesis is that if we knew our history, we would realize that ideas about crime matter. I offer a revised version o n how to view criminology and in doing so address the theme of the 2003 annual meeting of the American Society of Criminology, "The Challenge of Practice, the Benefits of Theory. ''The focus of my address is the life course of criminology in the United States. Rob Sampson and I have spent the last 17 years examining the life course of crime. What I want to do here is examine the life course of our discipline, criminology.' Lamin A, a nuclear lamina protein of differentiated cells, is synthesized as a precursor of the mature molecule. Protein sequencing of the carboxyterminal 14 kDa fragment shows a lack of the last 18 residues predicted by cDNA sequencing. The carboxy-terminal proteolytic maturation explains previous biochemical results including the loss of the pol~sop~nylation site now located to the CXXM motif at the end of the chain. This view and earlier results on lamin B predict multiple post-translational modifications shared by lamins A and B. While retained by lamin B, which is present in all cells, they are lost by maturation from lamin A, which probably acts only as an additional lamina constituent in differentiated cells.
