Three Localized f Electrons in UPd2Al3and in UGe2Intermetallics

Abstract: We have calculated the strength of the excitations between the crystal-field states which are in agreement with inelastic-neutron-scattering results. This agreement confirms the existence in the heavy-fermion superconductor UPd2Al3 the crystal-field electronic structure being the finger-print of the U 3+ ions with three localized f electrons forming strongly-correlated atomic-like quantum system 5f 3 . The ionic integrity and the low-energy crystal-field electronic structure is preserved in this metallic syste… Show more

“…Later low-energy crystal field states, energies and eigenfunctions, associated with Er 3+ and Nd 3+ ions have been described in conventional ErNi 5 [5] and Nd 2 Fe 14 B [7] intermetallics. An our description of normal-state electronic and magnetic properties of UPd 2 Al 3 [4], above the heavy-fermion and superconducting states (above, say 3 K) with U 3+ ions was later confirmed by experimental discovery of CEF states in inelastic-neutron scattering experiments [13]. The U 3+ ion has the Kramers doublet ground state.…”

“…Description of magnetic and electronic properties of compounds containing 3d-/4f -/5f -openshell atoms has been very vital part of the condensed-matter physics in last fifty years. The interest has been associated with such topics as Mott insulators, NiO [1], FeBr 2 [2] or LaCoO 3 [3], and heavy-fermion anomalous phenomena occuring in intermetallics with Ce, Yb and uranium (UPd 2 Al 3 [4]) atoms. These anomalous properties are very different from classical behavior observed in, e.g.…”

“…In the following, we will consider the realistic value U = 12 (3 eV) in the energy scale unit |t 1 | = 250 meV and J H /U between 1/10 and 1/6. For the bare SOC, we will consider values up to λ = 0.2 (50 meV) which lie in the realistic range for 3d ions [36][37][38]. However, we will mainly focus on the range λ ≳ 30 meV.…”
