The finding that early exposure to one species of plant sometimes enhanced the preference for another species (Hovanitz & Chang, 1962) need not imply that exposure to one compound altered the subsequent response to another: instead, it might involve a response to a single compound present at different concentrations in both plant species. Until more is known about the specificity of behavioural induction, it is premature to dismiss the parallel between behavioural induction and enzyme induction on the grounds of specificity differences.…”
