Three errors in the article: "The OPERA neutrino velocity result and the synchronisation of clocks"

Olivier Besida

Abstract: We found three mistakes in the article " The OPERA neutrino velocity result and the synchronisation of clocks" by Contaldi [1]. First, the definition of the angle of the latitude in the geoid description leads to a prolate spheroid (rugby ball shape) instead of an oblate spheroid with the usual equatorial flattening. Second, Contaldi forgot a cosine of the latitude in the centripetal contribution term. And last but not least, a profound conceptual mistake was done in believing that an atomic clock or any timek… Show more

“…A large number of theoretical models emerged trying to explain the observed anomaly, for example by Fermi point splitting [2], spontaneous symmetry breaking caused by the existence of a fermionic condensate [3], or a multiple Lorentz group structure [4]. However, the physics community remained sceptical and articles were published trying to explain the result by an error source that had not been taken into account [5][6][7]. Unfortunately, at the 25th International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics OPERA announced that their new measurement yields a deviation of the neutrino velocity from the speed of light, which is consistent with zero.…”

“…The authors of [2][3][4][5][6][7] tried to figure out how the OPERA result could be explained by possible systematical errors. Beyond that, in [8] a cross-check for the result was proposed.…”

“…The scientific community has produced a plethora of works to interpret the puzzling neutrino speed result. These works were based on some systematic errors caused by the Earth's motion (Monderen 2011) or errors in synchronization of clocks by either a third clock moving into the gravitational field of Earth (Contaldi 2011) or GPS satellites (van Elburg 2011), which were 1 http://proj-cngs.web.cern.ch/proj-cngs/ later reviewed (Besida 2011, Armando V.D.B. Assis 2011 2 ).…”
