“…Most of the previous studies suggested that the condyle in a normal individual occupied a symmetric position in the glenoid fossa (Blaschke & Blaschke, 1981; Williams, 1983). In contrast, the subjects with TMD tended to reveal asymmetric condylar position in comparison with those in normal subjects (Rozencweig, 1975; Pullinger et al. , 1987).…”

“…Gianelly, Cozzani and Boffa (1991) investigated condylar position in treated class II patients and the controls and suggested that A/P ratios were 0·68 and 0·77 in treated class II and control groups, respectively. Rozencweig (1975) suggested that the mandibular condyle was close to the temporal eminence under normal conditions and the anterior joint space was only a half of the posterior joint space, as was confirmed by the presence of thick soft tissues at the posterior joint cavity. Hansson and Nordstrom (1977) evaluated the thickness of the soft tissue layers and the articular disc in the TMJ and suggested that the thickness of the articular disc was larger in the posterior region than in the anterior, although thickness of the articular cartilage layers on the surface of the condyle and glenoid fossa was larger in the anterior area than in the posterior area.…”

“…Moreover, the earlier studies proved that the condyle in a normodivergent subject occupied a symmetrical position in the glenoid fossa (Blaschke & Blaschke 1981., [19] and Williams 1983., [20]). In disparity, the subjects with TMD tend to had the asymmetric condylar position in comparison with normal subjects.…”
