Purpose of review This review outlines recent innovations in simulation technology as it applies to urology. It is essential for the next generation of urologists to attain a solid foundation of technical and nontechnical skills, and simulation technology provides a variety of safe, controlled environments to acquire this baseline knowledge. Recent findings With a focus on urology, this review first outlines the evidence to support surgical simulation, then discusses the strides being made in the development of 3D-printed models for surgical skill training and preoperative planning, virtual reality models for different urologic procedures, surgical skill assessment for simulation, and integration of simulation into urology residency curricula. Summary Simulation continues to be an integral part of the journey towards the mastery of skills necessary for becoming an expert urologist. Clinicians and researchers should consider how to further incorporate simulation technology into residency training and help future generations of urologists throughout their career.

This technology has garnered significant attention in the medical field due to its ability to provide personalized diagnosis and treatment services. It finds applications in various areas, such as model printing, customized implants, and even organ printing. This review delves into the current uses of 3D printing in urology, including preoperative planning for surgeries, medical education, doctor− patient communication, and implant development. It also showcases examples of its utilization in both research and clinical settings. Moreover, the exploration of 3D printing for urethral repair and urinary organ reconstruction offers tailored solutions and the potential to replace conventional tissue engineering methods. The article provides an overview of the current applications of 3D printing technology in urology and discusses future prospects.

Tympanic membrane perforation (TMP) is one of the most common conditions in otolaryngology worldwide, and hearing damage caused by inadequate or prolonged healing can be distressing for patients. This article examines the rationale for utilizing three-dimensional (3D) printing to produce scaffolds for repairing TMP, compares the advantages and disadvantages of 3D printed and bioprinted grafts with traditional autologous materials and other tissue engineering materials in TMP repair, and highlights the practical and clinical significance of 3D printing in TMP repair while discussing the current progress and promising future of 3D printing and bioprinting. There is a limited number of reviews specifically dedicated to 3D printing for TMP repair. The majority of reviews offer a general overview of the applications of 3D printing in the broader realm of tissue regeneration, with some mention of TMP repair. Alternatively, they explore the biopolymers, cells, and drug molecules utilized for TMP repair. However, more in-depth analysis is needed on the strategies for selecting bio-inks that integrate biopolymers, cells, and drug molecules for tympanic membrane repair.
