3D Printing Technologies in Architectural Design and Construction: A Systematic Literature Review

The proliferation of digital technologies considerably changed the field of architecture. Digital fabrication pushes architecture into an unexpected new domain of previously unachievable complexity, detail, and materiality. Understanding these technologies’ impact can help direct future research, innovate design and construction processes, and improve the education of future professionals. However, comprehensive reviews offering a holistic perspective on the effects of 3D printing technologies on architecture are limited. Therefore, this study aims to provide a systematic review of state-of-the-art research on 3D printing technologies in architectural design and construction. The review was performed using three major databases, and selected peer-reviewed journal articles published in the last ten-year period were included in quantitative and qualitative analyses. Using bibliometric analysis, the research progress is summarized through the identified trend of the annual number of articles, prominent authors and co-authorship network, and key topics in the literature organized in three clusters. Further, content analysis of selected articles enabled coding cluster themes. Moreover, the analysis differentiated two categories of 3D printing technologies based on the scale of the system, elaborating their peculiarities in terms of materials, methods, and applications. Finally, challenges and promising directions for future work and research challenges are discussed.

The objective of this article is to generate and validate a workflow that allows us to print physical twins (models) from digital twins obtained from unique buildings of our architectural heritage. These physical twins will guarantee the preservation and diffusion of the cultural asset, and will promote new pedagogical ways to spread the heritage. In addition, these physical cufflinks are an interesting tool to guarantee universal accessibility through low-cost and rapid distribution typological models. We can overcome physical barriers and reach many more users, regardless of their economic, physical, or location conditions. To obtain this workflow, digital twins of architectural elements of high cultural value obtained by photogrammetry or terrestrial laser scanner will be used. The digital twin will be optimized through different platforms, and an optimized exchange file will be generated for its dissemination and printing. A digital platform will be proposed that guarantees the free distribution of these digital twins to any user. Finally, the physical twins will be obtained. For the development of this work, we have chosen to use 3D resin printers with SLA technology (selective laser exposure to light by laser) due to their performance and high quality in the models obtained.

3D printing for the reinterpretation of architectural heritage stands out as one of the most efficient ways of using contemporary printing technologies in terms of architecture. The aim of the study is to present a comprehensive methodology on how to use 3D printing techniques for reinterpretation of architectural heritage. In this context, the scope of the study consists of pioneering information obtained from literature studies focusing on the details of the use of three-dimensional printing techniques in the promotion, preservation and remodeling of cultural heritage and architectural heritage components. The method of the study was determined as identifying leading themes through literature research and presenting a method proposal by grouping conceptually related themes. The unique value of the study is important in that the model to be created offers a potential to affect mass production tools, offices and local governments by incorporating contemporary architectural heritage products into a modeling process that can produce more innovative and faster solutions. The findings of the study show that the different techniques used can respond to different detail scales and different contextual challenges. Each modeling method and strategy creates different feedback mechanisms, mediating the recognition of the architectural heritage element by larger user groups or the more effective protection of the architectural heritage element. In the model presented as a result of the study, which mediates the gathering of the techniques used in different sample projects on a common working ground with a series of successive strategies, a comprehensive basis for which 3D printing solution will be used for which problem is presented and solution suggestions are offered for a case-oriented 3D printing strategy.
