Three‐dimensional Modelling and Analysis of Dinosaur Trackways

Abstract: Light Detection And Range (LiDAR) imaging provides a means to model the 3D geometry of fossil tracks in the field with high accuracy. This represents a considerable advance for the science of vertebrate ichnology in which traditional field methods suffer from a significant degree of abstraction and lack the resolution required to interpret tracks quantitatively. Three-dimensional LiDAR models provide additional morphometric information and allow the application of new analytical tools unique to the digital env… Show more

“…The facility to rapidly capture sub-centimetre surface geometry of objects from distances of up to 800 m [49][50] suggests the method represents an ideal tool to digitize mounted skeletons of even the largest vertebrates. In this paper we describe the digitization of five skeletal mounts of four different species of non-avian dinosaur using LiDAR imaging.…”

“…In an attempt to overcome these problems, modern three-dimensional photography and 3D laser scanners are beginning to prove as being quite effective Breithaupt et al , 2004Matthews et al 2005Matthews et al , 2006Bates et al 2008aBates et al , b, 2009aFalkingham 2012;Vila et al 2013;Razzolini et al 2014). These techniques not only provide a more objective interpretation of the tracks, but also yield information about the dynamics of the trackmakers.…”

“…Recently, several different methods have been combined [4,6]. The 3D scanning of natural artifacts have a relatively lower rate of utilization as of yet [7][8][9][10].…”
