Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis and Biomechanical Analysis of Midfoot von Mises Stress Levels in Flatfoot, Clubfoot, and Lisfranc Joint Injury

Abstract: Background Midfoot deformity and injury can affect the internal pressure distribution of the foot. This study aimed to use 3D finite element and biomechanical analyses of midfoot von Mises stress levels in flatfoot, clubfoot, and Lisfranc joint injury. Material/Methods Normal feet, flatfeet, clubfeet (30 individuals each), and Lisfranc injuries (50 individuals) were reconstructed by CT, and 3D finite element models were established by ABAQUS. Spring element was used to … Show more

“…One hundred two-foot ligaments were modeled using rod units that can only be stretched but not compressed based on the anatomical information on the digital anatomical platform and the human atlas. These ligaments were manually positioned and added to the model according to the relevant anatomical landmarks, similar to previous studies [ 10 13 ]. Sixty bone models, 37 cartilage models, and 102 ligament models were obtained.…”

“…while we set the soft tissues as nonlinear materials to improve the reliability and accuracy of the experiments to simulate a more realistic quiet tissue state when this volunteer stood, and the floor material was manufactured as a wooden flat plate with a large Young’s modulus wooden flat plate to simulate the ground. The material properties of each component were obtained from the literature [ 13 , 18 , 19 ] (Table 1 lists the material properties of each element).…”

“…Два висновки з його роботи добре співвідносяться з нашими результатами: найбільших стресових навантажень зазнає периталарна зона; чим більшу міцність мають капсула та зв'язки, тим менших навантажень зазнає кістяк стопи. Моделювання стресових навантажень у нормі, при ПС та клишоногості показало, що в будь-яких умовах однією з найбільш навантажуваних ділянок є периталарна зона [21].…”

“…It has been commonly used to assess the biomechanics and stability of individual implants and to understand the mechanism of adverse trauma events [ 12 15 ]. Moreover, FEA has been used to analyze the internal pressure distribution of the foot in disorders such as flatfoot, clubfoot, and Lisfranc joint injuries [ 16 ].…”
