Three-Dimensional Evaluation on Ecotypic Diversity of Traditional Chinese Medicine: A Case Study of Artemisia annua L.

Abstract: Artemisinin is the first-line drug for anti-malaria recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). As the sole natural plant source of artemisinin, ecotypes of Artemisia annua L. vary widely in artemisinin content between nations, and China is the main producing area of A. annua. Here we present a three-dimensional evaluation on ecotypic diversity of A. annua from 12 main producing areas in China using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with evaporative light scattering detection (HPLC-ELSD) m… Show more

“…Analysing of suitable DNA barcodes for every species play an important role in diversity analyses [8]. Transposable elements are source of genetic and epigenetic variabilities and so important drivers of evolution [34].…”

“…DNA technology/molecular markers are used to prevent these problems. For this purpose, there are many studies related to DNA markers for identification of herbal medicinal species and their adulterants, investigation of genetic changes as a result of biotic/abiotic stress DNA fingerprinting among species and different tissues of the same plant, and evolutionary relationships [8]. One class of these markers is developed on the basis of retrotransposon sequences.…”

“…In addition to species identification, Chinese scientists are using DNA barcodes in phylogenetics (e.g., Feng et al, 2016;Liu et al, 2016;Chesters, 2017), the discovery of new or cryptic species (e.g., Liu et al, 2011a,b;Qin et al, 2018), and the evaluation of the levels of biodiversity (e.g., Chen et al, 2015;Chesters et al, 2015;Li et al, 2017;Sun et al, 2018; Figure 7).…”

“…The parental lines of commercial hybrids remain highly heterozygous and must be maintained by vegetative propagation, or as two distinct populations. Although many efforts have been made on the molecular genetics front to understand the ART biosynthesis and genetic regulation of the pathway, conventional breeding programs of artemisia have traditionally been performed by only a few companies and institutions around the world, such as Médiplant in Switzerland (Simonnet et al, 2008), Bionexx in Madagascar (Townsend et al, 2013;Suberu et al, 2016), the University of York in the UK (Townsend et al, 2013;Czechowski et al, 2016), North Carolina State University in the U.S. (Alejos-Gonzalez et al, 2011), and some places in China, such as the Institute of Medicinal Plants in Kunming (Yang et al, 2010;Liu et al, 2010a) and the Academy of Chinese Materia in Chongqing (Li et al, 2010(Li et al, , 2017. In order to generate commercial lines able to achieve the genetic potential of the species for ART production in different cropping environments, more concerted efforts and investment are required.…”

“…Being the raw material of conventional breeding, the genetic basis of artemisia is fortunately quite broad (Li et al, 2017). Artemisia shows great phenotypic diversity for important traits, including leaf morphology, trichome density, plant size, as well as terpenoid profile, and artemisinin (ART) yield.…”
