Three‐Dimensional Doppler Sonography in Asymptomatic and Symptomatic Women After Medical Termination of Pregnancy

Abstract: The necessity of surgery after medical termination of pregnancy cannot be predicted by sonography. In cases with sonographic evidence of suspected retained products of conception, endometrial thickness, 2D Doppler findings, and the 3D vascularization indices correlated poorly with bleeding symptoms. Long-term follow-up should be considered in symptomatic women, and it can avoid any unnecessary surgical intervention.

“…Measurement of the niche width in the transverse plane had the widest interobserver 95% LOA for real-time 2D and 3D volume images. Although 3D volume reproducibility was mostly comparable to that of 2D measurements, overall, assessment was more reproducible for 2D than 3D images; however, the latter may be used for offline quality control purposes 22,23 .…”

“…11 These findings were in agreement with those of Napolitano et al, who reported that sonographic suspicion of RPOC does not competently predict the need for surgery. 12 Bar-Hava et al found that the uterine cavity was rarely empty in the first few days following a first-trimester abortion. The intrauterine material tends to be hyperechoic to begin with and hypoechoic later in the week, indicating that the uterine content may be composed of liquefying or absorbing blood clots.…”
