Mesoscale eddies enhance the productivity in a stratified coastal environment by upwelling. The seas around the Andaman and Nicobar Islands have been found to have frequent mesoscale eddy activity. Commercial fishing grounds coincide with upwelling areas associated with cyclonic and anticyclonic eddies and also with areas between two adjacent eddies. There are different eddy zones supporting different types of fishing gears and fish. The current study aims at identifying the different zones of mesoscale eddies in the Andaman Sea and compares the productivity and fishing activity in each of them. Data collected from 454 commercial fishing trips in the Andaman Sea along with maps of sea level anomaly and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) global level 3 mapped thermal infrared (IR) daytime sea surface temperature (SST) from the Aqua and Terra satellites were used for the study. Known upwelling areas such as the periphery of anticyclonic and the core of cyclonic eddies showed higher catches in longlines, ring seines among the fishing gears, and among all the fish species groups. Downwelling areas such as the periphery of cyclonic and the core of anticyclonic eddies showed lower catches with ring seines and the fish species groups. Areas in between adjacent eddies were explored in this study and the fish captures in such areas were found to be different with types of fishing and the target fish group. The study shows results that link eddy activity with the performance of a fishery.

This study analyzed monthly and inter-annual variability of mesoscale phenomena, including the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) climate indexes and wind intensity considering their influence on sea surface temperature (SST) and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). These analyses were performed to determine the effects, if any, of climate indexes and oceanographic and environmental variability on the central and southern coastal ecosystem of Sonora in the Gulf of California (GC). Monthly satellite images of SST ( • C) and Chl-a concentration were used with a 1-km resolution for oceanographic and environmental description, as well as monthly data of the climate indexes and wind intensity from 2002-2015. Significant differences (p > 0.05) were observed while analyzing the monthly variability results of mesoscale phenomena, SST and Chl-a, where the greatest percentage of anti-cyclonic gyres and filaments was correlated with a greater Chl-a concentration in the area of study, low temperatures and, thus, greater productivity. Moreover, the greatest percentage of intrusion was correlated with the increase in temperature and cyclonic gyres and a strong decrease of Chl-a concentration values, causing oligotrophic conditions in the ecosystem and a decrease in upwelling and filament occurrence. As for the analysis of the interannual variability of mesoscales phenomena, SST, Chl-a and winds, the variability between years was not significant (p > 0.05), so no correlation was observed between variabilities or phenomena. The results of the monthly analyses of climate indexes, environmental variables and wind intensity did not show significant differences for the ENSO and PDO indexes (p > 0.05). Nonetheless, an important correlation could be observed between the months of negative anomalies of the ENSO with high Chl-a concentration values and intense winds, as well as with low SST values. The months with positive ENSO anomalies were correlated with high SST values, low Chl-a concentration and moderate winds. Significant inter-annual differences were observed for climate indexes where the years with high SST values were related to the greatest positive anomaly of ENSO, of which 2002 and 2009 stood out, characterized as moderate Niño years, and 2015 as a strong El Niño year. The years with the negative ENSO anomaly were related to the years of lower SST values, of which 2007SST values, of which -2008SST values, of which and 2010SST values, of which -2011 stood out, characterized as moderate Niñas. Thus, variability associated with mesoscale oceanographic phenomena and seasonal and inter-annual variations of climate indexes had a great influence on the environmental conditions of the coastal ecosystem of Sonora in the Gulf of California.

Resumen.-El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la variación temporal de las condiciones oceanográficas, ictioplancton y sus ectoparásitos en aguas costeras marinas. Se realizaron 30 muestreos de ictioplancton entre el 11 de octubre 2012 y el 5 de junio 2014 a lo largo de una transecta desde 0,25 km hasta 4,5 km de la costa frente a Montemar, Bahía Valparaíso, Chile central. Se identificó un total de 5.553 larvas de peces, pertenecientes a 37 taxa. Las larvas de peces más abundantes originadas de desove pelágico fueron la sardina común Strangomera bentincki (abundancia relativa= 26,39%), anchoveta Engraulis ringens (8,94%), y el mictófido Hygophum bruuni (7,72%); las especies más abundantes originadas de posturas bentónicas fueron la borrachilla Scartichthys viridis (15,77%), el cachudito Hypsoblennius sordidus (8,27%) y el pejesapo Gobiesox marmoratus (7,06%). Las larvas de peces más parasitadas provinieron de posturas bentónicas, los pejesapos G. marmoratus (prevalencia= 9,63%) y Sicyases sanguineus (0,54%), el tomollo Auchenionchus variolosus (1,72%), y el trombollito de tres aletas Helcogrammoides cunninghami (3,28%). La única especie con desove pelágico que presentó ectoparásitos fue el blanquillo Prolatilus jugularis (0,57%). Las larvas de peces con ectoparásitos mostraron una disminución en abundancia con la distancia a la costa; S. bentincki, H. bruuni (desove pelágico) o S. viridis (postura bentónica) fueron más abundantes a 2,0 km de la costa. Los ectoparásitos fueron identificados como Trifur spp. (Copepoda: Pennellidae) y Caligus spp. (Copepoda: Caligidae), siendo los penélidos los más frecuentes (1 a 3 parásitos por larva). El 94 y 88% de los penélidos y calígidos, respectivamente, fue recolectado en la estación más costera. Durante los periodos de mayor prevalencia de ectoparásitos en las larvas de peces, el agua de mar estuvo verticalmente estratificada con una profundización a fines de otoño y un ascenso en verano de la picnoclina desde mar afuera hacia la costa. Por lo tanto, los resultados sugieren que las larvas de peces originadas de posturas bentónicas son parasitadas más frecuentemente y que las condiciones físicas de la columna de agua pueden favorecer tanto la retención costera como la infestación por ectoparásitos en las aguas más cercanas a la costa.Palabras clave: Trifur sp., Caligus sp., pejesapo, gradientes horizontales de densidad, Chile central, SudaméricaAbstract.-The objective of this study is to determine the temporal variation of oceanographic conditions, ichthyoplankton and their ectoparasites in nearshore marine waters.
