Three-Dimensional Digitalized Surface and Volumetric Analysis of Posterior Prefabricated Zirconia Crowns for Children

Abstract: Objectives: This study was designed to compare the surface morphologies and volumes of posterior prefabricated zirconia crowns and posterior stainless steel crowns (SSCs) using digitalized three-dimensional (3D) reconstructed images. Study design: We tested prefabricated zirconia crowns (NuSmile ZR; Orthodontic Technologies, Houston, TX, USA) and SSCs (Kids Crown; Shinhung, Seoul, Korea) used to restore left maxillary and mandibular molars. A Rainbow scanner (Dentium, Seoul, Korea) was used to digitise the inn… Show more

“…However, the implementation of prefabricated zirconia crowns is not free of limitations and drawbacks. The latter might require a greater amount of tooth reduction [17,18], whereas, their increased hardness might lead to tooth wear of the antagonist teeth [13]. Finally, bond strength and surface alteration still constitutes a challenge [19,20].…”

“…This was attributed to the fact that patients between age 0-5 years are more prone to early childhood caries (Innes, 2015). But this was contradictory with the indings of previous studies by Choi (2016)and Lee (2019), whose indings showed that Zirconia crowns were more prevalent when compared to Stainless steel crowns. This can be attributed to the fact that stainless steel crowns are not aesthetically appealing, according to studies by Maciel (2017) and Abdulhadi (2017), which showed that parents of pediatric patients showed more concern towards aesthetics.…”

“…Moreover, the surface morphology of the PZCs affects this phenomenon. A study investigating the thicknesses of the PZCs reported that variations in thickness appear at line angles, which indicates that more appropriate tooth preparation is required in the line angle [ 13 ].…”

“…Consequently, they should require a passive fit, for which repetitive tooth preparations are required. This could lead to excessive reduction of the tooth structure [ 12 , 13 ]. Furthermore, as the inner and outer shapes of the PZCs are different from those of the SSCs, special care must be taken during tooth preparation.…”
